SPORT
Cricket is a team sport played with a ball and bat on a circular or oval-shaped grass pitch with a radius of approximately 70 meters. In the middle of the pitch, the grass is specially trimmed to form a rectangular strip 20 meters long, with wickets attached at both ends. The wicket consists of three 72 cm tall posts embedded in the ground, with two bails laid across the top. In order to score a goal, the crossbars must be knocked down. The ball has a core made of cork, and around the cork is twine wrapped with a covering made of red-dyed leather.
In a cricket team, there are 11 players. Each team alternates between playing in defense and attack. The team that is in possession of the pitch attacks the goalpost with the ball, trying to knock them down by hitting the crossbars, while positioning themselves to easily catch the ball. The team that faces the bat stands within the rectangular strip, defending the goalposts with the bats and scoring points with quick runs. Behind the batsman stands the opponent, the catcher. If the batsman fails to hit the ball, they will attempt to catch it themselves. This player’s duty is to observe the batsman's weaknesses and warn their captain, after which the captain may opt to reorganize the team on the pitch, but only with the opposing captain’s permission.
There are two batsmen in the game. They stand at different goalposts, but only one is involved in the game. The bowler’s goal is to throw the ball in such a way that the opponent’s batsman cannot hit it, make the ball hit the wicket and ruin it. The ball can be thrown in various ways, but deceiving the batsman is prohibited. The essence of the game is to knock out as many wicketkeepers as possible from the opposing team — out of eleven, ten defenders must be eliminated. A batsman can also be dismissed in other situations, specifically when the ball, blocked by the wicketkeeper, is caught by the opponent in mid-air, or when the batsman touches the ball with their body or foot. After this, the teams switch roles in batting and fielding.
