Chess is an intellectual game played by two participants using "white" and "black" pieces on a square 64-cell board with alternating dark and light squares. Each player has 16 pieces: one King, one Queen, two Rooks, two Knights, two Bishops and eight Pawns.
All pieces except the King move according to specific rules and can be captured by the opponent’s piece. Capturing a piece is not mandatory unless there is no other move to protect the king from an attack.
The game begins with White making the first move, and players take turns. The objective of the game is to checkmate the opponent’s King, meaning to place it in a hopeless position where it cannot escape the attack—either by moving to a safe square or blocking the opponent’s attacking piece with one of its own pieces.
The outcome of a match is determined based on the results of all games that make up the match. Additional conditions may be specified in the tournament program.
