General Review

Texas Hold’em is the most popular type among other Poker games. You will come across to it in almost every country of the world, casinos, internet and at home. Just like among most types of Poker, the aim of Texas Hold’em game is with the pot, which consists of the total sum of the bet amount placed by the players. The player, who manages to create the best 5-card combination, will win the pot. In order to get that done, he may use 2 hole and 5 common cards.

BASIC RULES

Texas Hold\'em can be played with as little as two players, up to a max of ten players. It is played with 52 card deck without joker. Each player receives two cards, face down. These cards are known as hole cards. Then, dealer hands out five community cards face up. Players can use any five cards to form the combination. The best five-card combination gains win over the pot.

GAME TYPES

Limit poker

In Limit poker a maximum of 4 bets is allowed during any betting round. This includes a bet, raise, re-raise, and final raise, but in No Limit poker and Pot Limit poker there is no limit to the number of raises that a player can make. In Limit poker Bet as well as Raise is agreed in advance. For example, in a 1/2 Limit game, both Bet and Bet Raise must be equal to 1 GEL. Not more or less than that. In last two rounds Bet and Raise must be equal to 2 GEL.  

 

Pot Limit

In a play with Pot Limit the maximum value of Bet or Raise shouldn\'t exceed the current total amount in the pot. For example: if the total amount in the pot in the middle of the table is 10 GEL, the first player to act in the betting round bets 10 GEL, the second player could bet a total of 30 GEL - 10 for his portion in order to equate the bet, which has been already placed and raise by 20 GEL - i.e. the total amount of money in the pot when the action got to him, including his call. There is no cap to the number of raises in Pot-Limit poker games.

 

Limitless

In a limitless poker there is a certain restriction in betting. Every player can place any bet in any betting round. Minimum bet equals to Big Blind (inevitable bet, which is placed by a player of the second rank).

 

GAME STAGES

The game stages are divided into four rounds of betting. Initial pot is formed by Blind Bets. The first player, who takes the first place at the table, is a dealer. The game starts from the player, sitting next to the dealer\'s chip. To indicate a dealer position a "round disc" is used. If players take place at the table simultaneously, on tournaments for example, each player receives straight one card face up. In this case the deal begins from the player to the left of the virtual dealer, and that player who receives the card of maximum value first, becomes a dealer. A dealer chip moves clockwise from player to player in each round.

Blinds

Before a game starts, the two players to the left of the dealer make Blind Bets, such bet is called "Blind", as they are made before the players have seen any cards. This is called "posting the blinds". The Blinds ensure that there is a certain sum of money in the pot to play for at the very start of the game. The player to the left of the dealer posts the Small Blind (Blind Bet). The second player to the left of the dealer posts the Big Blind (Blind Bet), which is equal to the double Small Blind. If player does not have enough chips to make Blind Bet, he stakes everything he has at once. Please see All-In. If there are only two players in the game, Small Blind and Big Blind are posted also. In that case dealer posts Big Blind. After that the first round begins.

 

Pre-Flop

Every player receives two cards back up. Each player can see his own cards only. The player to the left of the player who posted Big Blind begins a round of betting. This player can:

Call - match the amount bet in the big blind,

Raise - increase the amount bet, or

Fold - surrender his cards and stake in the game.

The same action can make each player when it is their turn to bet. When the betting returns to the player who made Big Blind, that player can not to increase the bet - Check - if it is equal to Big Blind (in case if no one player doesn\'t Raise). However, if an opponent has raised, Big Blind has three options: he must call, raise or fold. When all bets get equal, the initial pot is formed and the game turns to the next round (Flop).

 

Flop

In this round dealer is facing up three of Community Cards, which players can use to make their five-card hand. These cards are called "Flop". Player who makes Small Blind begins the betting round. If he flop the cards, the betting round begins from the first player to the left of him who does not flop the cards. When all bets get equal, the game goes to the next round (Turn - dealing the fourth card).

 

Turn

A fourth Community Card is dealt face up on the table. The third round of betting begins. The action starts with the first player still remaining in the hand who is closest to the left of the chip.

 

River

The fifth and final Community Card is dealt, and the final betting round is beginning. The action again starts with the first player still remaining in the hand who is closest to the left of the chip.

 

Showdown

When all bets get equal, it is time to show the cards. The last player to bet or raise during the final betting round shows his cards first. If during the last betting round all the remaining players are checking (nobody betting), the first player to the left from dealer who did not discard is to show his cards first. The other players reveal their cards moving clockwise around the table. If player\'s current hand is weaker than winning hand shown, he has the option to show or muck his cards. The best five-card hand takes the pot. If two players share an identical hand, the pot is split. Each player may claim the pot in forming of which he took part. Please see All-In.

GAME-SPECIFIC

Missed Blinds Policy

To prevent players from entering games in a late position to avoid placing blinds, you will have to post an initial fee, equal to Big Blind, or you can sit out and wait until Big Blind reaches your position. Player can choose to:

post Big Blind, or

wait for Big Blind.

If the player chooses to wait for Big Blind he will be sitting out and won\'t be able to join the action until Big Blind comes around to his position. If the player were at the table and then sat out for a while and missed his Big Blind, he will also have to miss Small Blind and the dealer\'s button. If you missed the small and big blind, you will be required to post an amount equal to the big blind plus a \'dead\' bet equal to the small blind.

 

All-In

If the player is run out of chips, he does not have a right to fold the cards. The player can go All-In and bet all his chips. In this case the pot is divided into the Main pot and the Side pot. All the next bets are included to the Side pot. If the player which goes All-In did not win, the winner receives all chips (both the Main and Side pots). If the player who goes All-In wins, he receives the Main pot, but the Side pot is passed to the player having the second highest ranking Poker hand. If several players go All-In, the several Side pots can be created. If the player who accepted all All-In bets does not go All-In by himself, but appears to have the highest ranking hand when cards were revealed, he takes the Main pot as well as the all Side pots. If the highest ranking hand has the player who went All-In, he takes the pot or all pots which were created until he went All-In. Every All-In player having highest ranking hand can take only the pot (or pots) in forming of which he took part.




Minimum and Maximum Buy-ins

Limited Poker

The necessary minimum of buy-in in limited poker exceeds Big Blind tenfold. The maximum Buy-In does not exist here.

For example: on a ½ limited table the sum of Big Blind to be paid comprises 1 GEL, correspondingly, the buy-in minimum comprises 1x10 or 10 GEL.

Pot and Limitless Poker

Pot-limited and limitless games have minimal and maximal Buy-In.

The minimum buy-in in general 20-fold exceeds Small Blind amount to be paid, as for the maximum one – it has a 100-fold increase in the ratio of Big Bling. For example: in limitless or pot limited games Small Blind pays 1 GEL and Big Blind - 2 GEL, correspondingly, the minimum Buy-In is 20 GEL, as for maximum – 200 Gel.

Table Stakes

All the games and tournaments correspond with the table stake protocol.

Adding chips by a player is forbidden within the process of the game.

The players have a right to join the game only in the interval of the hands, though some tournaments offer you Re-buy and add functions. It is possible to bring these functions into action only after the dealing and prior to dealing. Thus, the players may bring adding chips, Re-buy or adding functions into action during the process of the game, even when they do not participate in the above-mentioned dealing.

In which cases the players cannot use the existing chips on a table:

Within the process of the game, the players do not have a right to use the existing chips on the table unless they do not leave the table. This rule is applied by a player regardless of the amount of the chips on the table. The object of the table stake protocol is the game to be protected. Though, in case a player gets promotion, he may take a certain amount of chips from the table and continue the game with the remaining part of chips on the table. Such activity on the table is permitted according to the rules.

Sequence of the best five-card combination (“hand”).

In a Texas Hold’Em Poker the players compare their five-card combination among each other in order to reveal the winner. The player having “Royal Flash” combination has a better “hand” than the player having “Pool House” combination, for instance: Here is given a list of standard combinations starting from best to the worst ones.

POKER COMBINATIONS


In order to identify the winner of Texas Hold’em poker game, the players should compare their card combinations among each other. The player with “Royal Flush” combination has a better “hand” then the player with a “Full House” combination. Below you'll find the poker hands listed from the highest to the lowest.


Royal Flush

Combination of five inconsequent cards of the same suit. Flush is a “hand”, in which all cards are of one and same suit. If all cards are of one and the same suit, for instance: 3 Clubs, 5 Clubs, 6 Clubs, 8 Clubs and King Clubs, then we have a “Flush” combination. Don’t be mistaken if all of the five cards are of one and same color. In case two players appear to have “Flush” combination, the winner is determined according to the highest card the one holds.


Straight Flush

This is the second highest hand in poker. Straight Flush is a kind of a combination of Flush and Straight. The quality of this combination is determined according to the highest card. So the highest card in the highest possible Flush (the Royal Flush) is an Ace. Let's get it straight, when you find yourself with any cards of the same suit in sequence for instance: 6, 7, 8, 9, 10 - it's the Straight Flush. In other words, this is a sequence of the same suit cards. So, the Royal Flush is the Highest Straight Flush.


Four of a Kind

The third highest hand complies from four cards of the same rank. When you have 7,7,7,7 it's Four of a Kind that will certainly beat Full House and the all the other combinations, except Straight Flush and Royal Flush.


Full House

With any three cards of the same rank (also called triplet) plus any two cards of the same rank (a pair) you'll be holding a Full House. Basically, it's Three of a Kind plus one Pair. The three cards are in preference here that means that if several players are holding a Full House, the winner will be determined by the highest triplet.


Flush

When you find out that all of your cards in a hand are non-sequential and of the same suit - you're making a Flush. When several players are holding a Flush, the winner will be determined by the highest card in the Flush.


Straight

Here any five sequential cards of different suits will create a Straight. Such combinations, may contain an Ace, which can be either a '1' (A, 2, 3, 4, 5) or Higher than a King (10, J, Q, K, A). According to the basic poker rules, in case several players have a Straight, the one showing the highest Straight will win the pot. In case the Straights are equal, the pot is divided between the two players.


Three of a Kind (Triplet)

A hand containing three cards of the same rank is called Three of a Kind, in poker community this term is also referred to as a triplet. J, J, J - is a good example of Three of a kind. In those cases when two players have Three of a Kind, the one showing the highest triplet will win the pot. Though, when the triplets are equal, the winner is determined by the highest kicker (two cards not involved in the triplet).


Two Pair

Two cards of the same rank and another two cards of the same rank. As the name implies, this combination is formed out of two different pairs. For example JJ QQ - is a Two Pair. In rare cases when both players have the same Two Pairs, the winner will be determined by a kicker.


One Pair

The pair of cards of one and the same rank represents a “pair” combination.


High Card Hand

When you have a hole hand, so that none of the above mentioned combinations was created, you may try to use your best card to beat the opponent's one. If none of the two players have “Pair”, “Straight” or “Flash”, then the winner is determined by the highest card. In case of draw, the suit of a card is if no importance.

 

Omaha High Low

To make a winning combination in Omaha High Low you should create a poker combination consisting of 5 cards where the highest card in it should be not higher than 8. On order to create a low hand combination one may use an Ace as the smallest card (the Ace may be both the highest and the lowest card to help you making the corresponding combinations), Straight and Flush aren't counted as low combinations here.

According to the abovementioned, it's rather easy to guess that the best hand in Omaha High Low consists of 5-4-3-2-Ace. And again, keep that in mind, the Straight and Flush are not counted here. Or even in case all your 5 cards will wear the same suit (all hearts for instance), and if the Flush is not counted, yes, this will be the ideal combination for Omaha High Low. And you must also remember that any pair here will count as high. So in that case, 2-2-4-5-A will not make a "low" combination.

When none of the players managed to create a low hand, a player with the highest hand wins. On the contrary, when there are two players, one with the highest hand and the other with the lowest one will split the bank. In rare cases the player with both possible combinations in a single hand will take both High and Low parts of the bank. In a course of this game a player is expected to make the high hand first and only then (when it's possible) create a low hand. And the same rule acts for the showdown: the highest hand winner is determined the first.

How to play in Omaha High Low?

The game is played almost the same way as Texas Hold'em with the only one difference: By the time of showdown High and Low combinations divide the pot. If the Low combination has not been approved, then the High combination wins the entire pot.

Omaha High Low Strategies

Unlike Texas Hold'Em, the players have here more cards to play. Those who do not have at least basic strategy for Omaha High/Low, then this game may come at a high cost for them. High cost factor increases when less number of players fold their cards at the beginning of the game.

Omaha High Low Strategy - Remember 2+3

For evaluating your potential combination correctly, you must always keep in mind that only two out of your four cards are needed to form a combination with only three out of 5 cards on the table. This rule is highly important to remember in order to recognize the possible strong hand. On the other hand in case you do not pay special attention to it, in a course of the game your hand may appear higher than you expected. Always specify your combination with the 2+3 format.

Omaha High Low Strategy Nuts Low

First of all let us give the definition of the "Nuts low". To have a Nuts low hand means to have the strongest possible combination. The newbie players may not define it right away for the first time, though it's quite easy and which is more important, it's rather essential to know in order to win in Omaha High Low. Here is a small tip for you to remember for convenience of reference: «Nuts Low» is «2+3». It means in case two of your four cards in your hole cards are deuce (2) and Ace - you're holding a Nuts Low combination. But you should also keep an eye on the community (board cards, cards on the table) cards, as three of them consisting of 8 and lower and cards with no pair will be added to your deuce and Ace and form the lowest possible combination right in your hand. Another favorable outage for you will be created by Deuce and 3 and Ace on the table. As in a course of the game two more community cards will be added, like 8 or low and a couple of no-pair low cards - you'll certainly have the Nuts low. In this case we highly recommend you to raise the bets as in this situation you have some rather high chances to take at least the Low hand pot.

Omaha High Low Strategy Nuts Flush

As you must have already guessed, the best possible Nuts Flush combination is a Flush. All the players should know how to distinguish Nuts Flush at least for the purpose of getting obviously closer to the pot. Take a look at this example:

Your hole cards: 2c - Ac

The community cards: Dc - 9c - 7c.

As most of your opponents are likely to have the Flush hearts, you may keep calm as you know you've got the highest possible Flush - Nuts Flush. Being able to recognize this kind of combination may significantly improve your situation in the game and help you define your further bets volume.

Omaha High Low Strategy Your odds vs. The Odds of Your Opponent

Ideally you should know how to define the best possible combination of your opponent and if there are three cards of the same suit on the table. You must realize that in such situation at least one of your opponents may theoretically have a Flush. In this case if you are 100% sure your hand is not strong enough to beat a Flush - you must fold. On the other hand in case the community cards on the table form a light Straight as 3-4-6-8-9, it will get much better in case you are having at least Straight or a hand strong enough to beat it, on the contrary - you'd better fold.

In the mentioned example 3-4-6-8-9, there are at least 5 ways to form a Straight with two of your hole cards and 3 community cards out of 5 on the table:

• 3-4-5-6-7
• 4-5-6-7-8
• 5-6-7-8-9
• 6-7-8-9-10

Of course these examples may seem somewhere between science fiction and facts, though they clearly demonstrate the necessity of the player's high attention to the possible cards of the opponents.

Omaha High Low High Hands Strategy – Winning Hands

As this game involves a great deal of winning combinations, be ready to the fact that the number of them will seriously exceed the number of possible combinations in Texas Hold'em. So be sure to understand that Three of a Kind or a Pair are far no those combinations that often win in Omaha, so you should make your choice here.

Common mistakes in Omaha

One of the most usual first players' mistakes is that they are messed with defining the value of the starting hand after receiving their hole cards. That happens for the reason that most of them have discovered the poker world while playing in Texas Hold'em and that makes them overestimate their high cards while playing in Omaha poker.

For example a pair of Aces would have seemed a pretty strong combination for the PF (pre-flop), while it often appears to be the no-winning one when the flop doesn't show the third Ace.

So here is the small tip for the new Omaha poker players: keep your fair name and try to avoid bluffing until you feel secure enough for your defined strategy.

When switching from Texas Hold'em to Omaha, some new players will obviously to notice the parallel between the usual volume of the traditional Hold'em and Omaha High-Low's pot which tend to be well above. While most of players fold just after the flop when playing in Texas Hold'em, Omaha players with 4 hole cards in hands along with a vast number of odds will unlikely fold their cards after the first deal.

Another common mistake for the new players is not folding their cards with Nuts (the highest possible hand at the moment) after the flop. For instance you happened to get Nuts after the flop, let's say it was high Straight with Ace. So what happens next? The players will raise until it's your turn to make a decision. Common mistakes in Omaha

Pot limit is a kind of Omaha poker, which is also known as PL. This means that any bets or raises in a course of this kind of game are to match the amount in the pot. The max bet in the first betting round should be equivalent to the sum of the Small and the Big Blinds. For instance, pot limit with the amount of 1 GEL/ 2 GEL in Omaha game will start with 1 GEL Small Blind and 2 GEL Big Blind. By this time the player places a bet, except for the Blinds, pot comprises GEL 3, which is a maximum bet. Let’s say, the player makes a bet with the amount of 3 GEL. Now the other player watches 6 GEL - pot. He may match the bet or raise it up to 6 GEL.




Omaha

Omaha is a Texas Hold’em variation played almost identically with the only exception – the player is dealt 4 hole cards dealt face down instead of two as in Texas Hold’em.

These 4 cards are combined with the 5 common cards in order to compose the best 5-card combination, but a player has to use 2 out of his 4 dealt cards.

Remember, it’s highly important to keep in mind this fact, as in case you don’t, you are likely to have some troubles with cards volume definition. Take a look at this vivid example:

Your hole cards are: 5h – 10s – Jd – Ad.

The community cards are: 3d – 4d – 6c – 7c – Kh.

You may get surprised but here, neither you will make the Flush with Ace high and nor the Straight with 3-4-5-6-7. In this specific case, the only best combination to happen is a hand with Ace high.

Omaha Poker - Main Game

The game is played almost identically to Texas Hold’em, so if you are not sure in your skills, you should go back and read that part once again.

You should keep in mind 2 dealt cards at an initial stage (hole cards).




Texas Hold’em

Let’s start by defining how the Fixed Limit Texas Hold ’em is played. Here we’ll also describe the difference between Pot Limit and No-Limit poker.

Fixed Limit

In a Fixed Limit game, the bets (as the name implies) are made out of fixed amounts, and you cannot go beyond these limits. For instance, in case you are playing a GEL 2/GEL 4 table, then the first two betting rounds - The Pre-Flop as well as the Flop – will have a bet size of GEL 2, which will be doubled with the amount of GEL 4 after Flop. The table volume will be changed among 2, 6 and 10 players.

Dealer Button & Blinds

The game starts with a single card being dealt to each player. The player with the highest card shown is appointed as the Dealer Button. Each subsequent hand starts with a player receiving the dealer button which is passed clockwise round the table after each play. The cards are dealt clockwise starting with the person sitting next to the dealer.

Prior to The Flop, two Blind Bets are made in order to create an initial pot. The blind bets are made by two players sitting to the dealer's left. The player sitting next to the Button, posts (bets) the amount of the Small Blind. This is set as a half of the lower table limit. The player sitting next to small blind posts the Big Blind. If you bet GEL 2/GEL 4, then Small Blind posts GEL 1 and Big Blind posts GEL 2 in the pot.

Pre-Flop

Each player receives two face-down cards (also called Hole Cards, Pocket Cards). The person sitting to the left of the Big Blind position is the first one to act. In this round, he has three options. He can Call, Raise or Muck. If he mucks, as already mentioned, he throws his hand away, and the action passes to the next player on the left. If the player posts the bet or raises it, then the rest of the players must match or raise the bet in order to continue playing in the next round. If you plat at GEL 2/GEL 4 table, then the players must have posted a bet with the amount of GEL 2 and raised it up to GEL 4.

The action continues clockwise around the table, until it reaches the Blinds position. The blinds should raise or match the bet, but after they have already bet an amount into the pot, they don’t have to always add any money to the pot. Small Blind must necessarily bet an amount equal to the half of the lower limit in order to continue playing, when the big blind may declare check until anyone has already raised the bet (since the player has already posted a bet to the pot).

If pot was increased as a result of posting or raising the initial bet, then the player, who places or raises the first bet, must match it by adding the raised amount. If a player bets GEL 2 and another player raises it up to GEL 4, then the first player matches the bet and posts the bet with the amount of GEL 2 in order to continue the game. In a fixed limit one may raise 4 bets maximum inn each round when placing the bet (Raise, Re-raise, Cap). In case you play at a GEL2/GEL4 table, the bet for the first two rounds is GEL 8, the further two rounds - GEL16.

If anyone raises the bet and no other player matches it, then the player wins the pot and the current hand is over.

After finishing Pre-flop round the bets made by the players are gathered in the middle of the table.

The Flop

The dealer deals three face-up cards on the table. These cards are traditionally called the Community Cards or the Board Cards and, as the name implies, these cards are shared by all players at the table to help complete their poker hands. When the community cards are dealt, the first person required to make a decision is the player to the left of the Dealer Button. Usually this is the person in the Small Blind position, but in case the latter has mucked, then the next player is the first one to start the action. This player can either check or bet. The action then continues until each player has had a chance to check, call (if there has been a bet or raise), raise or muck. Once there is a bet or raise, each player must match the made bet, re-raise or muck for the action to continue. It is usual for all players to check during a round. In this case, no money would be added into the pot, and the round would be over.

The end of the round comes once all the players have called (or mucked), and have bet an equal amount.

The Turn

The dealer places a fourth face up community card right to the first three cards on the table. Third round of betting gets started and is played with the format similar to Flop. Now the bets are doubled. Then the action is carried on around the table until the players are given a chance to act.

The River

The final community card on the table. Each player now has seven cards in total: (their two hole cards and five community cards on the table). The final round of betting gets started. Since everyone has fold the cards and two or more players are left, the players disclose their combination (“Showdown”). The player, who has posted the final bet, shows his hand the first and then, the remained players show their combination by turn. The player may fold in case the combination shown by the other player is better than his one. The high-rank cards take a win over the game.

Limitless

Limitless is played in a similar way as Fixed Limit, but the volume and amount of raise is limitless. You may post the bet by your entire amount (even prior to viewing the community cards).

Pot Limit:

Pot limit is played in the same way as “Limitless”, but maximum amount of the bet equals to the current pot.

Note:

The best hand in Poker is formed via combination of the hole and community cards. Sometimes the community cards form the best combination by themselves.

The betting round is considered to be over when the all the players have already acted and posted the equal amount into the pot.

None can drop you out of a hand by means of placing a bet in Texas Hold’em. If you have started playing and you are run out the wagering amount you will always be able to reach the “Showdown”.

In the fixed limit the bet is doubled after the round of posting first two bets.

In “Limitless, you may place amount as much as you want.

In “Pot Limit”, you cannot enter the amount which is bigger than your pot.

Tournaments



Multi-Table Tournaments

In a multi-table tournament (MTT), players start with an equal, fixed number of chips. Players at numerous tables compete for one another's chips as the blinds and/or antes increase incrementally. When you run out of chips, you are eliminated from the tournament. As players are eliminated, tables are ‘broken’, meaning players are moved to keep tables full, or evenly ‘balanced’. Eventually, the last few surviving players with chips are brought together at the final table, where the winner is the individual who wins all the chips from his or her opponents. Cash prizes are awarded to top finishers on the basis of number of tournament entries

Shootout

A shootout is a special kind of multi-table tournament. Normally, when you play in a multi-table tournament, players are moved from table to table to balance the number of players at each table. Eventually, the last remaining players end up at the ‘final table.’ In a shootout, no such table balancing is done. You remain at your original table until only one player is left standing. If you win that table, you advance to another table and repeat the process against players who each won their first table.

Satellites,

A satellite is a tournament in the prize of which is an entry into a larger tournament. It can be less expensive to enter a satellite than it would be to enter the main tournament directly. The buy-in for the larger tournament is $200. The buy-in for the satellite is $20. The first place will get a $200 entry to the larger tournament. Satellite tournaments rules are identical to standard tournaments. If many players participate in a tournament, two or more players may acquire a right to participate in a big tournament simultaneously, who will take the best ranks. Moreover, the rest of the players will also be awarded with the cash prizes.

Freerolls

A poker tournament that is free to enter with free cash prizes to the winner. There are no minimum amounts for participation (buy-in), but is possible to win real cash prizes here. These tournaments are certain promotional offers of Poker Room in order to attract a big number of players. Most of them, who play Freerolls, become players, who gamble with real cash. We come across these tournaments almost in each Poker room. Usually, there are no large amount offers on these tournaments, but then it takes place regularly. It is a wonderful opportunity for the beginners in order to gain some practice.

Bounty Tournament - tournaments, during which a cash bounty is placed on every entrant in the tournament. Every time you eliminate somebody, you win a cash prize! Timeout Tournament - Tournaments with time limit. The tournament winner is revealed after certain time duration, after summarizing the stakes. In Timeout tournament there are rules of standard tournament, though the main difference is that the tournament lasts for a certain period of time. As a rule, such tournaments last 15, 30, 60, 90, 120 or 180 minutes. After efflux of the given time, the tournament results are summarized. At the moment of finishing the game process, the players divide the tournament prize pool between each other with the highest stakes. Stake Limit Tournament - A special time of tournament, in which a player must gain a win over his opponent and reaches the limit of indicated stakes. In the given tournament you should reveal your skill of taking decision in a prompt way and be the first who gains victory over the opponents. The Stakes Limit is indicated within Stake Limit tournaments, which the player must reach in order to win the tournament. Limit is indicated beforehand, prior to start of the game and as soon as the chips amount of any player reaches the limit, the final draw of active combinations are over at each table and the game comes to its end. The player, who earns the stakes of the indicated amount – wins the tournament. The remaining prize pool is divided in accordance with the earned chips. In case some of the players earn the chips of one and the same amount, the player who reaches the final stake earlier than his opponent does – he will take the highest rank. If the players earned stakes at one and the same time - then they divide the prize pool and get the amount from the prize pool on equal terms.

When a hand is beaten by a lucky draw.

Backdoor

Catching both the turn and river card to make a drawing hand. For instance, let’s imagine you have Ah-10h as your pocket cards. The flop brings Kd-6c-5h. You bet and are called. The turn is the Jh, which everybody checks, and then the river is the Qh. You've made a "backdoor" nut flush.

Backraise

The term used to call the re-raise from a player who originally called.

Bankroll

Means the amount of money managed by the player.

Bet

The term used to mention the fact of placing the chip into the pot.

Bet Odds

The odds you get as a result of evaluating the number of callers to a raise.

Bet the Pot

When a player bets the same amount as there is in the pot.

Big Blind

The amount fixed by the table limits, which is placed by the player sitting in the second position, clockwise from the dealer, before any cards are dealt. (Players joining a game in progress must post a Big Blind, but may do so from any position).

Big Slick

A starting hand that contains an A-K cards

Blind

The obligatory forced bet(s) that must be made by the two players sitting directly to the dealer's left which will start the action on the first round of betting. The blinds are posted before any cards are dealt. (A 'Blind' bet is one that is made without looking at your cards.) Traditionally there are two Blinds: Small Blind and Big Blind, the amount of them is set by the table limits. For instance, in the game with 2\4 limits, the amount of the Small Blind will be equal to 2, and the amount of the Big Blind will be equal to 4, correspondingly. So, remember, the Small Blind is always a half of the Big Blind.

Blind Raise

The situation when a player raises without looking at his cards.

Bluff

To make other players believe that you are having a better hand than you might have have, by means of aggressive betting and raising.

Board cards

The cards that are dealt face-up in a poker game for all players to see. In Texas Poker, five cards are dealt face-up in the center of the table.

Bottom Pair

The situation when a player uses the lowest card on the flop to make a pair with one of his own cards.

Bullets

The term is used to call a pair of Aces.

Button

The term is also known as the dealer button. It is a small round disk that is moved from player to player in a clockwise direction following each hand. That action is performed to theoretically indicate the dealer of each hand.

Buy-in

The term is used to determine the minimum amount of money required by a player to sit down in a particular poker game. Other words, the player “buys” his place at the table.


C

Call

Correspond to the bet amount. In other words it is an answer to the previous raise or bet.

Call Cold

To call both a bet and a previous player’s raise.

Cap

The situation when a player decides to take the last kind of raise allowed per round of betting. There are 4 possible amounts of allowed raises, Cap is the last one.

Cash Out

To leave the game and convert chips into cash

Check

When it's a player's turn to act and there has been no action in front of him and he decides not to place any bet, he 'checks.' Other words, the player checks the next actions at the table.

Check-raise

The term describing the situation when a player first checks and then raises in a single betting round.

Chop

The situation when all the players fold to the blinds before the flop. After that the blinds are returned to the players, who posted them and move on to the next hand. The term is also known as “chopping the blinds”


D

Dealer

A person who handles the cards, gives out the pots, and monitors the game.

Dealers Position

The term used to determine a player who is the last to act in a betting round. The term is also known as the position ‘on the button”.

Diamonds

One of the four playing card suits. These are the red color cards represented in a form of tiles.

Disconnect Protection

A tool to protect online players in case their internet connection is lost while involved in a pot.

Dominated Hands

Hand that is possible to be played, but tend to lose against similar non-straight or flush hands. Example: A2 is being dominated by the other hands with an Ace, which might have a better second card apart from an Ace. Dominated hand loses or draws without improvement.

Dominating Hands

Strong hands that are not only good, but also have lots of room for improvement.

Down Card

Hole cards, or cards that are dealt face down to the player.

Drawing Hand

A hand that is one or more cards away from the winning combination. The term is usually applied to a potential straight or flush. The missing card may come on any of the next rounds.

Drop

The situation when a player folds

Deuces

A pair of Twos.


E

Early Position

Position at the playing table during the betting round, where the player must act before most of the other players at the table. Two positions located to the left of the Blinds are considered to be “early positions”.


F

Fifth Street

The term used to determine the fifth card among the other community cards to be revealed and placed on the board. Also known as the River.

Flop

In Hold'Em, the first three community cards that are dealt face-up in the center of the table, before the betting round begin. The flop also indicates the second round of betting.

Flush

Any five cards of the same suit.

Flush Draw

When a player has four cards in his hand, all of the same suit and is hoping to draw a fifth card in the next rounds to make a Flush.

Fold

To throw your cards away when it's your turn to act. When the player decides not to play with his current cards he folds.

Forced Bet

A required bet that starts the action on the first round of a poker hand. This term is also used to determine an obligatory bet a player has to make in order to join the game or return to the game he had temporary left.

Four of a Kind

Four cards of the same number or face value (quads).

Fourth Street

The term used to determine the fourth card that is revealed and placed on the board among the other community cards. Also known as the Turn.

Full House

Any three cards of the same number or face value, plus any other two cards of the same number or face value.


G

Gut Shot

A situation when a player is 1 card away from a straight and there are two betting rounds left to complete it. It means that he has 4 out of 5 cards required to form a straight.


H

Hand

A player's best five cards.

Heads-up

The situation when only two players remaining in the game and are involved in the pot.

Hearts

One of the four playing card suits. Red suit, represented in a form of a heart.

High-card

In order to decide the first dealer in the flop tournaments, each user is dealt a single card and the player with the highest card (based on the card and the suit order - of spades, hearts, diamonds & clubs) becomes the dealer. The second definition is a hand which ranking is determined only by the value of the highest card in the hand. In case any combination was formed at the table, the player with the high card in the hand wins.

High Limit

A game that requires a large amount of money to wager.

Hi/lo

Games where the pot is spited into High and Low ones for the corresponding hands.

Holdem

Also known as Texas Hold'em. The poker game, where the players get two down cards and five community cards.

Hole Cards

The term used typically in the community cards poker. These are individual face-down cards dealt to the player so that no other players are entitled to see them. Also knows as “pocket cards”.


I

Inside Straight

Four cards that require another one between the top and the bottom card to complete a straight. In other words – the middle card required to complete a straight. Example: a player has 5,6,8,9 – to complete a straight, a player needs the 7. Players who managed to catch this card make an Inside Straight.


J

Jackpot

A prize fund awarded to a player who meets a set of predetermined requirements. For example, some casinos will give a jackpot to someone who gets four-of-a-kind or higher and loses.


K

Kicker

The highest unpaired side card in a player’s hand. For example, in 4 of a Kind combination, 4 cards out of 5 cards in the hand are involved in the combination; the remaining card is called a kicker. In Three of a Kind situation – two kickers are remaining.

Kick It

An invitation to make a raise.

Knock

The term used when a player doesn’t want to raise, call or fold. The term is also known as Check.


L

Ladies

Two Queens.

Late Position

A Term used to call the position on a betting round where the player must act after most of the other players have acted. Usually is considered to be two positions next to the right of the button.

Limit Poker

A game that has fixed minimum and maximum betting limits, along with a specified number of raises allowed.

Live Hand

A hand that can still win the pot.

Low Limit

A game where the amounts wagered are small.


M

Main Pot

The center pot. The pot, which all the active players have contributed into and all of them are eligible to win it. Any other bets are placed in a side pot(s) are contested among the remaining players

Middle Pair

A pair composed with a pocket card and the second-highest card out of three cards revealed on the flop; second pair.

Middle Position

The position at the poker table between the early position and the late one. The fifth, sixth and seventh players to the left of the button are having the middle position

Muck

This term has several meanings. First is the discarded card or cards thrown away and kept in a pile aside. It is also a pile of cards that are no longer in play. And the other meaning is not revealing your cards after another player has won.

Minimum Buy-in

The minimum amount of money which will allow you to start a game.


N

No Limit

A game where players can bet as much as they like (as long as they have it in front of them) on any round of betting.

Nuts

The best possible hand during any point of the game. A hand that cannot be beaten


O

Odds

The probability of making a hand vs. the probability of not making a hand.

Offsuit

Cards of different suits.

On the Button

To be on the button means to be the last player to act in a betting round. The term is also recognized as the Dealer's Position. The latest position at the table is called “on the button”.

Open-ended Straight

Four consecutive cards whereby one additional (consecutive) card is needed to make a Straight. There are two possible card ranks that will complete a straight; as opposed to a one-ended straight draw or an inside straight draw.

Open Card

A card that is dealt face-up.

Open Pair

A pair that has been dealt face-up.

Out Button

A disc placed in front of a player who wishes to sit out a hand, but remain in the game and simply observe the process.

Outs

The number of cards left in the deck that theoretically can improve your hand.

Overpair

The term used to call pocket pair of cards which are higher than any of the cards on the board.


P

Pair

Two cards of the same face or number value.

Pass

Means to fold.

Play Back

Term used when a player decided to raise or re-raise another player's bet.

Playing the Board

In flop games, when your best five card hand consists of all five community cards.

Pocket

The initial cards dealt to the player. The term is also known as the down cards or the hole cards.

Pocket Cards

The two cards dealt to you at the beginning of a Hold'em hand that no one else is entitled to see.

Pocket Rockets

Another name for a pair of Aces in the pocket.

Position

This term is used to determine the actual place where a player is located in relation to the dealer. Position therefore establishes the player's turn in the betting rounds.

Post

If you miss the blind, and then you must post - add as many chips as were in the blind itself.

Pot

The money or chips in the center of a table that players try to win.

Pot Limit

Raise

The amount of money a player pays to add a fixed number of chips to his/her stack in a tournament.

River

This is the last card given in all games.

Round of Betting

Royal Flush

Satellite

Second Pair

In flop games, when you pair the second highest card on the board.

Set

Showdown

At the end of the final betting round, it's when all active players turn their cards face-up to see who has won the pot.

Side Pot

A separate pot(s) which is contested by remaining active players when one or more players are all-in.

Small Blind

The amount put in the pot by the person immediately to the left of the dealer button prior to the cards being dealt
